About

The West Midlands Butterfly & Moth Group was founded in 2025 by members and former members of Butterfly Conservation living in the West Midlands.

The Group is volunteer-led and has no paid staff. It is focused on taking practical action at a local level to conserve butterflies and moths across Birmingham and the Black Country, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire.

We aim to be a welcoming organisation and volunteers will be able to participate in our activities without the need for unnecessary registration processes or other bureaucracy. We will organise a programme of conservation tasks at important sites for butterflies and moths and encourage volunteers to help with surveying and monitoring, as well as providing events to encourage involvement in and awareness of the needs for the conservation of butterflies and moths. Partnership is important to us and we will work with a range of organisations who share our objectives. Where required, we will seek to raise funding in support of our work.

We believe in ...

  • Growing our impact over growing our membership
Focusing on the real-world effectiveness of our work, rather than expanding our numbers.
  • Practical conservation over a vision
Focusing on actionable, tangible conservation efforts, rather than abstract or theoretical goals
  • Local engagement over centralisation
Prioritising community engagement and local impact over distant, top-down control.
  • Personal relationships over processes and automation
Building strong, meaningful connections with individuals, rather than relying on processes and tools.
