Rattlechain Lagoon (Birmingham and the Black Country)
Rattlechain Lagoon is a former landfill site in Tividale which is predominately made up from black foundry sand, containing some toxic heavy metals. It is private land with public access - sturdy shoes are recommended. Access is from Mac Donald Close B69 3LZ , a residential road. National cycle route 81 and canal and also Sheepwash Nature Reserve in same area.
The unique substrate of the site has resulted in some quite unique flora including tower mustard, a plant that has grown about 6ft tall. This is one of the only places in the Midlands that it can be found.
The area has a thriving breeding population of both Common and Small Blue butterflies and Marbled Whites. Gatekeepers and also present along with Speckled Wood in decent numbers.
This area is under consultation for possible housing development, which is yet to be decided.
